GERD - Bumps in the Throat
Heartburn is a common experience, known and felt around the world. Heartburn that is chronic can result in gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Some people with GERD are found to have bumps in the throat.
GERD bumps in the throat are not common. Their presence, however, is one more sign that the throat is experiencing prolonged exposure to acid and stomach juices.
Are Those Really GERD Bumps in the Throat?
GERD bumps in the throat may not be GERD bumps at all. Everyone has visible bumps in the back of the throat. Each of those bumps is a papilla. The plural of the word is papillae. Papillae are natural fleshy bumps in the throat. The upper surface of your tongue also has papillae. They are concerned with taste, touch, and smell. Yes, there are taste buds in your throat.
Detecting GERD Bumps in the Throat
GERD bumps in the throat are normally not detected during a routine examination. Many are detected only incidentally when an X-ray is done for other purposes. If, for example, your physician wants to know whether your GERD is causing serious damage to the esophagus, an X-ray may be ordered. In reading the X-ray, the physician notices the bumps.
Granuloma in the Throat
It is believed that long standing GERD may sometimes cause granulomas in the throat. Granulomas appear to be bumps.
A granuloma is a small inflamed area. It occurs when tissue has been injured in some way. Granulomas are most likely to occur in the lungs, but they can occur in other parts of the body. Granulomas cause no symptoms. They are not cancerous, but may resemble cancer on an X-ray. The tissue that is affected by granulomas usually appears scarred.
Granulomas require no treatment.
Other Bumps and Lesions
Other bumps and lesions can also occur, whether or not related to GERD. Some of these may be serious. If you believe you have GERD bumps in your throat, have the condition checked by a licensed physician.
