Basic Information about Heartburn and Acid Reflux
Heartburn, a common experience, begins as a burning or warm sensation at the base of the breastbone. It may or may not be accompanied by acid reflux.
Define Acid Reflux
Acid reflux is a flowing back into the esophagus of acidic stomach juices. It may cause burning pain in the esophagus.
Cause of Heartburn and Acid Reflux
Heartburn and acid reflux may be caused by weakness, or an overpowering, of the ring of muscle that keeps food from leaving the stomach. This muscle ring, called the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES is designed to contract and keep acids in the stomach. It should relax only to allow food descending the esophagus to enter the stomach for digestion.
The stomach juices that flow back up into the esophagus during heartburn and acid reflux consist of hydrochloric acid, pepsin, and sometimes bile. These powerful stomach juices help digest food, prevent bacteria from growing in the stomach and intestines, and help the body absorb vitamins and nutrients. The hydrochloric acid in the stomach is very corrosive. The stomach’s lining is specifically designed to protect it from the acid and other stomach juices, but the esophagus lacks that lining.
